Divine Healing vs Natural Healing
Natural Healing
Natural healing works through capacities God has placed within creation and the human body. It also works through the witty inventions He has given men through doctors.
God created the human body with extraordinary restorative ability. Cuts close, bones mend and immune responses fight infection. This is part of God’s created order without the influence of sin and Satan.
Nutrition is also important. You can educate yourself on nutrition and get great benefits. Many diseases can be avoided through nutrition.
Doctors on the other hand have made great strides to cure many ailments. These are all benefits we have in God’s created order.
Limitations Of Natural Healing
There is no guaranteed natural defence to sickness. Yes, there are many cures and helps, but there is only one guarantee - divine healing.
Jeremiah 8:22 · NKJV
Is there no balm in Gilead,
Is there no physician there?
Why then is there no recovery
For the health of the daughter of my people?
Jeremiah 46:11 · NKJV
“Go up to Gilead and take balm,
O virgin, the daughter of Egypt;
In vain you will use many medicines;
You shall not be cured.”
The balm of Gilead was famous enough to be proverbial. This was the best wound-medicine the ancient Near East knew. Egypt itself imported it. When Jeremiah names Gilead, he is naming the top of the pharmacopoeia. Yes, there is an excellent balm. Yes, there are skilled physicians. Why then is there no recovery? Natural healing is limited especially when used while in disobedience to God. This is what many do not understand.
When it comes to things like hereditary disease for example, science is mute. Also we all found out the limitation of the immune system in children and old people during COVID.
Egypt was itself the land of medicine, yet Jeremiah prophesies to them that even if they travelled to Gilead for the famous balm, they will not be cured because the cause of their sickness was SPIRITUAL!
In Jeremiah 8:22 Judah had the balm in her own territory and still died of the wound. In Jeremiah 46:11, Egypt had the greatest medical reputation of the age and was told, sarcastically, to import Israel’s balm of Gilead—but still there would be no healing. The cause of their sickness was that God was not on their side. They were living in disobedience.
The immune system, nutrition, and medicine are real. Gilead’s balm was real. Egyptian physicians were real. However, none of them can close a wound God has appointed, and none of them can substitute for a return to the Lord in repentance.
Some conditions outrun the immune system, diet, and the pharmacy. When the wound is ‘deeper than the flesh’, natural means reach their ceiling.
Divine healing
Divine healing is an intervention of God by His power. Doctors, medicine and nutrition work in the physical body. When God heals, He heals through the human spirit. This is the distinction. Many are trying to receive divine healing with their body and mind, and that’s where failure starts.
Matthew 8:17 · NKJV
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
“He Himself took our infirmities
And bore our sicknesses.”
We all know Jesus took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses on the cross. Let’s stop to think about it. Was Jesus blind on the cross? Deaf? Dumb? This scripture does not mean Jesus had every sickness on the planet on Him on the cross. He took sickness spiritually. He took it on His spirit.
Thinking naturally
John 3:4–5 · NKJV
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old?
Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born
of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
We sometimes have the problem of thinking naturally when it comes to spiritual things. Jesus told Nicodemus he had to be born again, and Nicodemus was thinking naturally. He thought he had to get into his mother’s womb and come out again to be born again. We have taken the same attitude to divine healing by thinking it is physical instead of spiritual. Divine healing is spiritual because it starts in your spirit instead of your body. Medicine and nutrition start to work in your body.
No limitation to Divine Healing
Luke 1:37 · NKJV
“For with God nothing will be impossible.”
There are no limits to divine healing because God is the source and with God nothing is impossible. Missing arms, legs and all - God can do it all.
Faith and unbelief
Matthew 9:28 · NKJV
And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him.
And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”
Matthew 13:58 · NKJV
Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
Because divine healing is spiritual, it is based on the direct spiritual condition of man. There are two primary conditions that either block or allow divine healing - faith and unbelief. Matthew 9:28 tells us that Jesus could heal the blind men because they believed. Matthew 13:58 tells us that Jesus was hindered because of their unbelief. This shows that divine healing is based on the condition of the human spirit. You cannot believe with your mind and body as far as Bible faith is concerned. Bible faith is of the human spirit.
Who you are spiritually determines your health.
Divine Healing is Spiritual
We have never realised that the human spirit powers the human body. Divine healing is spiritual because human beings are more than mere physical beings. Until you realise divine healing is spiritual, you will look for it in the physical rather than spiritual.
The spirit being the life of the body:
Genesis 2:7 · NKJV
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
James 2:26 · NKJV
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Proverbs 18:14 · NKJV
The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness,
But who can bear a broken spirit?
Here we see why divine healing is spiritual. In Genesis 2:7 God formed the body. It was dead and lifeless. No amount of vitamins, energy drinks and medicine could make it live, until God breathed into him a spirit - the life of the body. James 2:26 tells us that if the spirit leaves the body, you drop dead. No matter what treatment or nutrition they give your dead body, the body without the spirit is dead. Proverbs further tells us that a strong spirit will sustain you in sickness! It is your spirit that powers your body.
God’s order - the spirit being first and the body being last
1 Thessalonians 5:23 · NKJV
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The first thing you notice is that the preservation of the body is as important as the spirit and soul. But notice the order - spirit first, soul second, and body last. Doctors will start from the body, nutritionists will educate your soul on what to eat, and God will heal through the spirit. When it comes to divine healing, you can be too body conscious to be healed, because you are looking for divine healing in the wrong place — your body. We have yet to develop a spirit consciousness in the Church.
Consecration
Exodus 15:26 · NKJV
and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God
and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments
and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you
which I have brought on the Egyptians.
For I am the LORD who heals you.”
You can have the best diet and doctors, but here God gives the root cause of sickness - disobedience. If you disobey God from your spirit, there will be no occasion to be healed. There is also a certain lack of reverence in our healing services. A lady said she wanted to be healed so that she can play tennis. That’s not a spiritual reason to be healed. You ought to be healed only for the glory of God. That is a spiritual reason. People can hinder healing just by having wrong attitudes in their spirit or heart. Attitudes of the flesh have no value in the realm of the spirit. We seek to receive healing because our bodies belong to God. You cannot live anyhow and be healed. It takes the spiritual attitude of consecration to put God first. Put spiritual things first.
it answers only to spiritual principles.
Putting divine healing first
2 Chronicles 16:12 · NKJV
And in the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became diseased in his feet, and his malady was severe; yet in his disease he did not seek the LORD, but the physicians.
In 2 Chronicles 15:2 the man of God had said to the king, “The LORD is with you while you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you”. Yet Asa did not seek God in his sickness. He turned to the physicians. The sin was that despite having a way and covenant with God, he reached out for the medicine bottle. Going to the doctors is not sin, but going to the doctor without God is sin and idolatry. Medicine today has become a small god to many believers. They do not seek God first. You seek God first and then go to the doctors. Spiritual laziness will cost you when there is no cure or your body gets too old to recover.
Final Word
“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
Matthew 4:4 · NKJV
